Lomography ISO 8 and ISO 13 Black and White Film: Low Speed Film for Maximum Detail

Most film photographers default to ISO 400 for flexibility and ISO 100 for fine grain. ISO 8 and ISO 13 occupy a completely different part of the spectrum. These ultra-low speed films from Lomography are specialty tools, producing images with almost no visible grain and a tonal range that rewards careful, deliberate shooting in bright conditions.

Why Would You Shoot ISO 8 Film?

Film speed determines how much light the emulsion needs to form an image. ISO 400 film is four stops faster than ISO 25 film, meaning it needs far less light to expose correctly. ISO 8 is at the extreme slow end of the spectrum, requiring significant light to get a proper exposure.

The reason to shoot ISO 8 is grain. The slower the film, the smaller the silver halide crystals in the emulsion, and the finer the grain structure in the developed image. ISO 8 film produces images with almost no discernible grain at normal print sizes. When you scan a properly exposed ISO 8 negative, the detail is extraordinary.

Lomography Fantome Kino ISO 8

The Lomography Fantome Kino B&W ISO 8 is a 35mm black and white film derived from a cine film emulsion. Its low ISO makes it ideal for bright outdoor shooting, pinhole photography, and studio work with controlled artificial light. The contrast is high and the grain is essentially invisible, giving it a look that is distinctly different from mainstream black and white films like Ilford HP5 or Kodak T-Max.

Because of its limited exposure latitude, you need to meter carefully. This is not a forgiving film. Get the exposure right and you get extraordinary detail. Misjudge by more than a stop and you lose the image. Use a dedicated light meter and take your time.

When to Use Ultra-Low ISO Film

  • Bright outdoor daylight: Direct sun gives you enough light to shoot at usable shutter speeds even at ISO 8.
  • Pinhole cameras: Pinhole photography requires extremely long exposures. A slow film means you can shoot in normal outdoor light without exposures lasting hours.
  • Studio with powerful strobes: Controlled artificial light with powerful flash allows precise exposure at any ISO.
  • Maximum grain reduction: When you want images that look as clean and detail-rich as possible for large-format printing.
