The IQZoom is an autofocus 35mm compact camera introduced by Pentax in 1987. It won awards from the Technical Image Press Association (TIPA) and European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA). It was one of the earliest 35mm compact cameras to offer a zoom lens function. Previous compacts were primarily based on fixed or dual focal lens designs. It started the Pentax Espio IQZoom cameras series.
It uses a 35 to 70mm f/3.5 to 6.7 zoom lens made of 8 elements in 7 groups. Autofocus is based on an infrared-type system. It has a focus range of 1m to infinity. If closer focus is desired the macro mode reduces the focus range to 0.6 to 1m. The shutter speed is at 1/40 to 1/250 of a sec. The front left-hand side of the camera has a number of buttons. From the top is the self-timer which has a 10-second delay. The middle is for fill flash. The bottom button is for exposure compensation, press and holds while depressing the shutter release button to increase the exposure by +2 EV.
The film is automatically loaded, advanced, and rewound. Mid-roll rewind can be done by pressing a very small button in a narrow slot at the base of the camera. It is compatible with DX-coded films from 50 to 1600 ISO. Non-coded films are set at ISO 100. It can be powered by either a single CRP2 battery or four AAA batteries.
Date models are also available. Imprinting formats include Year/Month/Day, Month/Day/Year, Day/Month/Year, Day/Hour/Minute with am/pm mode, and off. It is capable of imprinting years 85-09 (1985 to 2009). The date unit is powered by a CR2025 cell.
