History:

Produced from 1973 to 1976, the Leitz Minolta CL was the Japanese home-market version of the Minolta-manufactured Leica CL 35mm M-Mount camera, identical in all respects except for the nameplates.

Two brand-new Leica M mount lenses were offered with CL system: (1) a Leica 40/2 Summicon-C (in Japan, these lenses were rebadged as “M-Rokkor 40/2”); (2) and a Leica 90/4. This camera comes with the 40.  You may also use most of Leica's classic M-mount lenses on this camera; the mount is the same.

Viewfinder:
The CL’s viewfinder can display framelines for 40mm, 50mm, and 90mm lenses. The 40 and 50 framelines are always displayed; the 90 is displayed only when that lens is mounted.

Mechanics:

  • Shutter speeds B, 1/2 to 1/1000.
  • ISO settings 15 to 1600
  • Mechanical shutter
  • Manual operation
  • TTL exposure meter

The back/bottom plate unit of this camera slide off to load the film.  Once you have started a roll, you cannot change the meter battery mid-roll without opening the back.

The CL originally used a PX625 1.35V mercury battery to power the meter, which is activated by slightly cocking the advance lever. You can use a Wein Cell 625 replacement (the most accurate replacement) or an alkaline or silver version, which both have a slightly different voltage and will slightly affect the meter, but are easier to find.  Since this camera has a mechanical shutter, you do not need to load a battery at all (if you shoot without a meter or shoot with a handheld meter).
