The Canon AE-1 Program is a beginner-friendly 35mm SLR great for anyone who is just getting into film photography or a seasoned photographer looking for a classic camera. It offers full program as well as priority mode.
What does that mean? Briefly, when you shoot in a priority mode (this camera offers shutter-speed priority), you select one value (in this case, the shutter speed) and the camera selects the other value (here, aperture) that yields a correct exposure according to the built-in meter.
The first value that you set (the shutter speed) will not change until you change it, but the camera may continue to select different apertures as the lighting conditions the meter is evaluating change.
When you shoot in Program mode, you are giving the camera permission to select both the shutter speed and aperture for the shot. The camera tells you which values it is selecting while you shoot.
Why do people like this feature? For one thing, it opens up the possibility of concentrating more fully on your subject -- the only things you are doing manually are selecting what's in your field of view and focusing the lens.
Additionally, if you're in a situation with truly variable lighting, you may find while shooting in shutter-priority mode that you have to stop and adjust your shutter speed because the resulting aperture that would create a "correct" exposure from the perspective of your built-in light meter is undesirable for the shot you envision.
Program mode on the AE-1 will give you a camera shake warning (if it needs to go below 1/30th of a second) and a low light exposure warning (if the aperture can't open wide enough). Shutter priority mode will still warn you about over- or under-exposure.
And like the vast majority of cameras that offer priority and program modes, you can still shoot the Canon AE-1 Program in manual (where you select the aperture and shutter speed independently, overriding the information from the camera's meter).
